What is plug-in solar?

Plug-in solar is a compact solar generation system that connects into a suitable household socket rather than being wired into your consumer unit. The panels produce DC electricity, a microinverter converts that into AC, and your appliances draw on it as it is generated. Whatever isn't consumed at that moment can pass out to the grid.

When can I legally use a plug-in solar kit?

You can legally use a plug-in solar kit in Great Britain from 27 August 2026, when the new rules come into force. Until that date, don't plug a kit in or run it - the only exception is a kit installed via a compliant professional installation route.

Is plug-in solar suitable for every home?

No, plug-in solar is not suitable for every home. You need an unshaded outdoor position that is safe to work in, a professionally installed outdoor socket of the correct type, a secure place to mount the panels, and room to meet the clearance and ballast requirements in the instructions. Where there is any doubt about the property, the socket or the wiring, speak to a qualified electrician first.

Do I need to notify my electricity network operator when installing plug-in solar panels?

You should follow the registration or notification process set out in the rules in force and in the documentation supplied with your kit. Your distribution network operator is likely to ask for details identifying the exact ENA-listed product, so keep the model number, serial number and compliance reference somewhere safe.

Will the plug-in solar panel system export electricity?

The system feeds your home first, and only a small surplus may flow to the grid when generation exceeds what you are using at that moment. Being paid for that export isn't automatic - it depends on your meter type, your energy supplier and whether you have an export tariff in place.

Will the plug-in solar panel work during a power cut?

Whether you need planning permission depends on the property, its location and how the kit is mounted. Extra restrictions often apply to flats, listed buildings, conservation areas, balconies, wall fixings and anything visible from the street. Do I need an electrician to install the plug-in solar panel?

No, you don't normally need an electrician to install a compliant plug-in kit - it is designed to be fitted by the customer, following the supplied instructions.

The socket is the exception: it must be of a suitable type, correctly protected and installed by a professional. Never alter your household wiring. How heavy are the solar panels?

A solar panel usually weighs in the region of 25kg, and its size and shape make it awkward to handle even at that weight. Two capable adults should unpack and carry each panel, using the lifting points and technique described in the instructions. Never attempt to lift a panel in high winds.
