Eagle DT1 has been gaining traction across the UK as a fast, reliable single-coat liquid waterproofing membrane - but what exactly is it, how does it work, and is it right for your project? We've answered the most common questions below.
What is Eagle DT1 Liquid Waterproofing?
Eagle DT1 is a single-component liquid waterproofing membrane manufactured by Eagle Waterproofing. It belongs to a category of products known as liquid-applied membranes - coatings that are brushed or rolled onto a surface wet, then cure to form a seamless, elastic, fully waterproof layer.
What sets DT1 apart in its category is the one-coat application -most liquid membranes require two or three coats to achieve the necessary thickness and coverage. DT1 is engineered to deliver a complete, durable waterproof membrane in a single pass, applied with a standard solvent-resistant roller.
Once cured, it forms a continuous elastic membrane that bonds tightly to the substrate, accommodates movement and cracking, and resists UV degradation, stagnant water, ice, and extreme temperatures.

What Makes Eagle DT1 Different from Traditional Waterproofing Membranes?
Traditional flat roof waterproofing typically involves torch-on felt, cold-applied bitumen, or GRP (fibreglass) systems. Each comes with trade-offs. Torch-on systems carry a fire risk and require skilled operatives. GRP systems demand precise mixing and application windows. Multi-coat liquid systems are time-consuming and weather-dependent.
Eagle DT1has the following benefits:
- Single coat - no return visits for second or third coats
- No reinforcement required - the product has high crack-bridging capacity and over 550% elongation, meaning it flexes with the building
- No open flame -safer to use than torch-on systems, particularly near vulnerable substrates or occupied buildings
- Instantly showerproof - the surface is rain-resistant within a very short period of application
- Compatible with existing substrates - including bituminous felt, metal, PVC and concrete, making it ideal for re-roofing without strip-out
It also maintains its physical properties across a wide temperature range - from -30°C to +90°C — which is important in the UK climate where roofs are exposed to both freezing winters and intense summer heat.
What Surfaces Can Eagle DT1 Be Applied To?
One of DT1's strongest selling points is its broad substrate compatibility. It adheres well - without the need for a primer in most cases - to a wide range of common roofing and building materials, including:
- Concrete
- Bituminous sheets and torch-on membranes
- Metal decks (including cut edge corrosion detail)
- Wood
- PVC and synthetic single-ply membranes
- Fibre cement
- Ceramics
It can also be used on damp substrates - a significant advantage when working on UK roofs where getting a completely dry surface before application can be a challenge. Note that for voids and gaps larger than 5mm, Eagle matting should be used to bridge the gap before applying DT1.
How Long Does Eagle DT1 Last?
Eagle DT1 is backed by a 10-year guarantee. For a single-coat liquid membrane, this is a strong commitment and reflects confidence in the product's long-term durability when correctly applied.
The membrane's longevity is supported by its technical specification. It has excellent UV resistance, which is the primary cause of deterioration in many flat roof coatings. It also resists stagnant water (ponding) and ice - two other major threats to flat roofs in the UK. With over 550% elongation at full cure (tested to ASTM D412 / EN-ISO-527-3), the membrane accommodates structural movement and substrate cracking without splitting or delaminating over time.
As with any waterproofing product, lifespan in practice will depend on correct surface preparation, application method, and ongoing maintenance.
How Easy is Eagle DT1 to Apply?
DT1 is designed to be straightforward to apply and is suitable for use by competent roofing contractors. It does not require specialist equipment - application is by solvent-resistant roller, and the product comes ready to use straight from the can (mix well before applying, either by hand or with a low-speed mixer).
The touch dry time is 2–3 hours, and the product can be repainted (if needed) after 8-12 hours. Full cure is achieved in 7 days. The high thixotropic index (4.5–6.0) means it stays where it is applied without slumping -which is particularly useful on vertical applications such as upstands, flashings, and parapet walls.
Temperature matters during application. DT1 should be applied when the ambient temperature is between 2°C (and rising) and 35°C. Avoid application in freezing conditions, heavy rain, or direct hot sun without appropriate precautions.
What Surface Preparation is Required Before Applying Eagle DT1?
Good surface preparation is the foundation of any successful waterproofing job, and DT1 is no exception. Before application, the substrate should be:
-
Structurally sound - repair any cracks or damage before coating
- Clean - remove dust, loose particles, moss, lichen, and any other contaminants that could compromise adhesion
- Free of standing water - while DT1 can be applied to damp substrates, it should not be applied into ponding water
One notable advantage is that DT1 does not require a primer on most substrates - this saves time and reduces the number of products needed on site. For gaps or voids exceeding 5mm, Eagle's own reinforcing matting should be embedded before applying the membrane to ensure full bridging and an unbroken waterproof layer.
How Does Eagle DT1 Perform in UV Exposure and Extreme Weather?
UV degradation is the number one enemy of flat roof coatings. Many liquid membranes chalk, crack, and lose elasticity within a few years of sun exposure. Eagle DT1 is specifically formulated with excellent UV resistance, and its 85% solids content means there is relatively little material lost to evaporation during curing - the membrane that goes on is close to the membrane that stays.
In terms of temperature performance, the membrane retains its physical properties between -30°C and +90°C. This means it won't become brittle in cold snaps or soft and tacky in summer heatwaves - an important consideration for dark-coloured roofs that can reach very high surface temperatures in direct sunlight.
DT1 is also rated for resistance to stagnant water and ice - relevant for flat roofs where pooling occurs. Its vapour permeability (the membrane allows surfaces to breathe) helps prevent moisture build-up underneath the coating, which can otherwise cause blistering and adhesion failure over time.
Is Eagle DT1 Environmentally Safe and Compliant with UK Regulations?
According to the product data sheet, Eagle DT1 contains no toxic substances after curing. This is relevant both for occupant safety in and around the building and for long-term environmental impact.
During application, standard PPE is recommended: an air-purifying respirator, rubber gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing. Waste should be minimised and disposed of in line with local and national regulations - incineration under controlled conditions is recommended for residual material.
How Much Does Eagle DT1 Cost, and How Much Do You Need Per Square Metre?
Eagle DT1 is available in two drum sizes: 4.5 kg and 14 kg metal cans. The coverage rate is approx 1.5 to 2 kg per m², so a 14 kg can will cover up to 9 m² depending on substrate porosity, surface texture, and application method.
For a straightforward calculation: measure the area in m², divide by 1.5 kg for a minimum-coverage estimate or 2 kg for a more conservative one.
This works out at a cost of around £14 -£19 per m² approx.

What Types of Project Can Eagle DT1 Be Used On?
Eagle DT1 is a versatile product suited to a wide range of waterproofing applications, both on new builds and refurbishment projects:
- Flat roofs — new build and re-roofing over existing membranes
- Gutters and parapet gutters - where a seamless, flexible seal is essential
- Verandas and balconies — including those with foot traffic (traffic grey finish)
- Metal decks — including cut edge corrosion treatment, which is a common failure point on profiled metal roofs
- Detail work on single-ply or torch-on membranes - particularly upstands, penetrations, and flashings where full-sheet membranes are impractical
- Retaining walls
- Damp surfaces under tiles - suitable for use as a tanking layer beneath ceramic or porcelain tile finishes
Its combination of fast cure time, single-coat application, and wide substrate compatibility makes it a practical choice for contractors managing multiple projects or tight turnaround schedules.
