Torch-On Perforated Underlay is an economical, glass-fibre reinforced bitumen membrane designed to form a preparation and ventilation layer beneath compatible torch-on roofing systems. Suitable for both new-build and refurbishment projects, it helps create a controlled, partially bonded waterproofing system across a range of suitable substrates.
The membrane is loose-laid before the next torch-applied underlay is installed. Evenly distributed 40mm perforations allow the overlying underlay to bond through to the substrate, creating a consistent pattern of adhesion.
This partial bond allows water vapour to move beneath the waterproofing system towards suitably positioned roof vents, where it can escape.
Key Features
- 20m x 1m roll: 20m² gross roll area before overlaps and cutting.
- Perforated construction: Evenly spaced 40mm holes provide controlled bonding points.
- Glass-fibre reinforcement: Perforated glass-fibre mat within a polymer-modified bitumen compound.
- Ventilation layer: Allows water vapour to move beneath the waterproofing system towards suitable roof vents.
- Loose-laid installation: Secured during application of the subsequent torch-applied underlay.
- Burn-off film: Polyethylene film protects both sides of the membrane.
- Versatile use: Suitable for compatible new-build and refurbishment roofing systems.
Application
Use as the preparation and ventilation layer within a compatible, partially bonded torch-on roofing system. Lay the perforated membrane loose over the prepared substrate, then install the specified torch-applied underlay above it.
This product is a system preparation layer, not a standalone waterproof covering or exposed roof finish. Install in accordance with the roofing system manufacturer’s instructions, with suitable roof ventilation provisions. Torch-on application should be carried out by trained roofing professionals using appropriate fire precautions.

Delivery Information
The Chesterfelt Roofing felt Range is delivered directly to your chosen location by our network courier partners typically with in 2 - 4 working days.
Deliveries will be completed on a variety of large HGV vehicles which may include Extra Large Articulated HGV Vehicles. Please consider any restrictions close to your location that may impede or stop your delivery from taking place. Please notify us in advance of any restrictions that you feel could be an issue to avoid any potential delays or additional charges being applied.
The rolls will be placed on timber pallets and offloaded by a pallet truck and tail lift to the roadside only.
Please note that on all small orders of roofing felts rolls made be laid down on their sides to enable safe transportation of the product. This will not effect the final quality or performance of the roofing felt but some flattening will occur whilst these are laid down.
We strongly recommend refraining from booking, scheduling, or commencing any works until you've received your complete materials order. Your satisfaction and seamless project execution are our top priorities.
FAQ's
What is Torch-On Perforated Underlay used for?
It forms a preparation and ventilation layer beneath compatible torch-on roofing systems. Its perforated design allows the waterproofing layers above to be partially bonded to the roof substrate.
What size is the roll?
Each roll measures 20m long x 1m wide, providing a gross area of 20m². Allow for any overlaps, cutting and detailing required by the roofing system specification.
Why does the membrane have holes?
The evenly distributed 40mm perforations allow the next torch-applied underlay to bond through to the substrate at controlled points, creating a consistent partial bond.
How does it help with roof ventilation?
The partially bonded construction allows water vapour to move beneath the waterproofing layers towards suitable roof vents, where it can escape. The membrane must be used with appropriate ventilation provisions.
Is the perforated underlay torched directly to the roof?
No. This membrane is loose-laid over the prepared substrate and secured during installation of the subsequent torch-applied underlay, in accordance with the roofing system manufacturer’s instructions.
Can it be used on new roofs and refurbishment projects?
Yes. It is suitable for both new-build and refurbishment applications where a compatible, partially bonded torch-on roofing system is specified.
Is this a waterproof roof finish?
No. The membrane is perforated and cannot provide a watertight covering on its own. It must be installed beneath the specified waterproofing layers and must not be left as the exposed roof finish.
What is the membrane made from?
It is manufactured from polymer-modified bitumen reinforced with a perforated glass-fibre mat. Both sides are protected by a polyethylene burn-off film.
Can it be laid over any roof surface?
It can be used over a range of suitable substrates, but compatibility and preparation requirements must be checked against the roofing system manufacturer’s instructions before installation.
Does it replace a vapour control layer?
No. It serves a different purpose and should not be used as a substitute for a specified vapour control layer.
Should it be installed by a professional roofer?
Yes. Although the perforated layer is loose-laid, the subsequent layers require torch application. Installation should be carried out by a trained roofing professional using suitable fire precautions.
