Application of granite flat roof gravel stones
It is advisable to bond all the perimeter areas with either hot bitumen or a cold gritting adhesive, available to purchase separately.
It is recommended to use a Cold Gritting Adhesive around the perimeter area at least. This will help to secure the chippings to the roof area and reduce the chance of the chippings being blown or washed over the perimeter edge of the roof.

FAQ's
Why put gravel on flat roofs?
There are four main reasons for putting gravel on a flat roof:
- The weight anchors the felt membrane, acting as ballast and preventing it from lifting in high winds
- The stone chippings afford some protection to the waterproof membrane, should people or animals walk on it
- They offer protection from the weather. Mostly from damage from the sun in the Ultra Violet (UV) rays, but also from severe rain and hail.
- Gravel traps any debris that might end up on the roof - such as leaves & twigs - and be washed into the gutter & drains, thus preventing a blockage.
- To slow or reduce the spread of flame in case of a fire.
What are the best gravel stones for a flat roof?
The best gravel stones for flat roofs are approximately 6mmin diameter, with rounded edges, so they do not pierce the membrane when walked on. Generally this includes granite, limestone & pea shingle.
What are the maintenance recommendations for flat roof gravel?
Felt and bitumen based flat roofs should be checked at yearly intervals for any defects , such as cracking. Additionally, you should check for any bare patches where chippings have washed away, and replace them.
It is also advisable to check gutters, as loose gravel that's been washed away, can often end up causing blockages.
