How to clean a fibreglass flat roof

Firstly, any loose debris such as leaves are best swept from the roof using a soft brush.

You can then use any of the following methods to wash the surface, depending on the access and equipment available:

  • Mop and bucket
  • Soft brush and warm soapy water
  • Pressure washer (non steam)

How often should a GRP roof be cleaned?

In most cases, a yearly clean is sufficient, and a good time to do it is early spring, to clear off the debris from the previous autumn / winter.

In some cases, where debris builds up due to the proximity of trees or where moss grows on a north facing roof, you may need to clean more often.

Cleaning off mold & mildew

If your GRP flat roof is suffering from mold or mildew, the following process is advised:

  • mix up a solution of 1 part bleach to 4 parts water
  • apply to the fibreglass surface
  • let it sit for 15 minutes.
  • rinse off with fresh water.

Cleaning moss and algae

Stubborn deposits of moss or algae that can't be shifted using the above methods, can be cleaned using either a chlorine mix or a mixture of sodium hydroxide.

Environmentally friendly cleaning

One option to clean your GRP roof that is environmentally friendly is white vinegar. This can be purchased in bulk 5 litre containers and mixed with water.
